Concerns Regarding Inclusivity of the Blind

Introduction to the Challenges Faced

In conjunction with the campaign for the White Tongkat Day 2024 celebration, we must address the pressing issues that visually impaired individuals face in Sarawak. A recent short video showcased the reality of these challenges, highlighting an OKU (Orang Kurang Upaya) individual successfully withdrawing money from an ATM machine independently. While the banking system has made strides towards inclusivity, it is still fraught with obstacles that need immediate attention.

Banking Limitations for the Visually Impaired

Despite having advanced ATM machines equipped with a complementary voice system, the banking practices in place pose significant restrictions for visually impaired individuals. Most notably, many banks deny OKUs the opportunity to own ATM cards, a decision that is both perplexing and disheartening. Currently, only Bank Simpanan Nasional (BSN) seems to provide a streamlined process for issuing ATM cards to visually impaired customers. This reality raises questions about the policies of other financial institutions in the region.

Call to Action for Inclusivity

It is imperative for banks to reconsider their customer service strategies and adopt more inclusive policies. Allowing visually impaired individuals to obtain ATM cards after opening a fixed account would not only enhance their independence but also reflect a modern banking environment. Bank officers must shed any preconceived negative notions about their capabilities, as these individuals are often highly capable and intelligent. In moving forward, we hope that other banks will follow in BSN’s footsteps and foster an environment of inclusivity and accessibility for all.
